Box Score (Sheboygan, Wis.) - The Carroll University football team opened the 2012 season with a 24-17 non-conference road victory at Lakeland College. The Pioneers scored 10 points in the final 5:59 of the game to erase a 17-14 deficit.
The Muskies jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with a touchdown at 9:49 of the first quarter but Carroll would find the end zone twice before the period ended. Justin Butterfield connected on TD passes with Matt Sklander (49 yards) and Aaron White (13 yards) at the 6:41 and 1:52 marks of the first period, respectively.
Lakeland scored the only points of the second quarter – a 40 yard field goal – to cut Carroll’s lead to 14-10 at halftime. The Muskies jumped ahead 17-14 late in the third quarter when they returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Pioneers however, with Tyler Raymaker hitting a 20 yard field goal at 5:59 and Butterfield throwing his third TD toss, this time 28 yards to Tyler OStrander, with 3:55 remaining in the game.
Butterfield finished the day 14-of-27 in the air with 174 yards and three touchdowns.
Carroll sacked the Lakeland quarterback four times, including two for preseason All-American Josh Zank. Steven Korus led CU with 11 total tackles.
The Pioneers return to action on Sept. 8 when they host Ripon College at 1 p.m.
