HANCOCK, Mich. - Junior guard Brittney Wald (Antigo, Wis.) had a team-high 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals but the Carroll University women's basketball team lost to Calvin College 79-40 in the opening round of the Finlandia University Classic on Saturday afternoon.
It was the fourth consecutive road loss of the season for Carroll, which dropped to 0-5 overall.
The Pioneers were outscored 23-6 in the first quarter, including 11 unanswered points in the opening minutes.
It proved to be the turning point as Calvin went on a 19-12 second-quarter run to build a 42-18 lead at halftime.
Freshman guard/forward Hannah Kloehn (Marshfield, Wis.) followed with six points and eight rebounds for Carroll, which shot 26 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers. Freshman guard Caylee Koker (Kenosha, Wis.) added six points and seven rebounds.
Senior forward Anna Timmer scored seven of her team-high 17 points during the key first-quarter run for Calvin, which improved to 6-0 overall.
Junior guard Bre Luurtsema contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Calvin, which shot 52 percent from field-goal range, maintained a 47-35 rebound advantage and scored 50 points in the paint.
