Mark Bayer (Waukesha, Wis.) at the 9:42 mark to take an early lead but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University men's soccer team lost to Illinois Wesleyan 2-1 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the sixth loss by a one-goal margin for Carroll, which dropped to 0-2 in the conference standings and 2-8-1 overall.
The Pioneers led 1-0 at halftime but Illinois Wesleyan responded with two second-half goals to ensure a victory.
Sophomore midfielder Doug Ballard scored on an assist from sophomore forward Justin Yaeger in the 49th minute to tie the game for the Titans, who outshot Carroll 12-5 - including a 6-2 shot-on-goal advantage. Freshman defender Ryan Gibbs followed with the winning unassisted goal at the 69:33 mark.
Freshman goalkeeper Joey Johnson played the entire 90 minutes to preserve a shutout for Illinois Wesleyan, which won its conference opener to improve to 6-3-1 overall.
