Pioneers split on Senior Day

The men's and women's swimming teams celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, as they both hosted Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The women picked up a victory with a 126-76 score, while the men fell to ITT 86-213. Overall, head coach Mike Lucchesi was pleased with his teams performances.

Despite taking the loss, Lucchesi was happy with what he saw from the men's team, stating, "They're spirit and positive attitudes has them in a great place competing individually and we look forward to see how they finish this season!"

The men were led by James Kelly, who took first place in two separate events. Kelly snagged first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.87 seconds and the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.87 seconds.

The other top performer for the men was Michael Beckman, who helped secure two second place finishes for the Pioneers. Individually, Beckman took second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.82. Beckman was also apart of the men's 200 yard relay that took second with a time of 1:50.31. Aaron Talabac, Jerry Hinson and Joshua Kuhn were the other members of that relay team.

Lucchesi was extremely impressed with the women's teams effort, stating "Not only did they look stronger than they have all season, but they took it to IIT today and brought home a solid win".

The women were led by the trio of Kaitlin Squier, Lindsey Coons and Jordan Andrews. The three athletes joined forces in the women's 200 yard medley relay, helping the Pioneers claim first place with a time of 1:54.68. Halle Cox was the fourth member of that relay team.

Andrews took second in 100 yard freestyle (1:01.55) while also leading the Pioneers in what turned out to be a very successful 50 yard freestyle event, with Pioneer swimmers taking the top four spots. Andrews took first with a time of 26.01 seconds, while fellow Pioneers Rowan Liederbach (26.45 seconds), Erin Paschke (26.74 seconds) and Maggie Fiekes (27.32 seconds) took second through fourth respectfully.

Squier and Coons both had excellent performances in the pool, as they both collected two individual first place finishes. Squier took first in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:19.75 and the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.65. Coons won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:03.38, while also winning the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.55.

Amanda Klaeser swam well for the Pioneers, taking first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:37.60 and second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:44.44.

The women's team also had a solid 400 yard freestyle relay, as they finished in second place with a time 4:02.90. The relay consisted of Liederbach, Fiekes, Marissa Stacy and Maggy Locke.

The Pioneers will be back in the pool on January 27, as they compete in the Wisconsin Private School Invite at Carthage College.
