Missed opportunities derail Pioneers

Carroll falls 2-0 to Wheaton in fierce CCIW road matchup

WHEATON, Ill. - The Carroll University men's soccer team lost to Wheaton College 2-0 in a windy College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was the fourth consecutive conference for the young, hard-working Pioneers, who dropped to 0-4 in the league standings and 0-11-2 overall.
Wheaton, which improved to 3-2 in conference and 8-4-1 overall, scored both of its goals in the first half to ensure a victory.
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Melgar scored what proved to be the winning goal off an assist from junior forward Peter Whallon at the 20:59 mark for the Thunder, who outshot Carroll 15-10 in the physical contest - including a key 6-2 shot-on-goal advantage.
Junior defender Chad Miller added the other goal on an assist from junior forward Misekar Wingate in the 41st minute.
Junior forward Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain) and freshman forward Charlie Coenen (Little Chute, Wis.) each had a shot on goal for Carroll, which struggled to capitalize on five corner kicks - including three opportunities in the second half.
Freshman Peter Villafuerte (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Connor Thompson (Kent, Wash.) each contributed two saves in playing a half at goalkeeper for the Pioneers.
