Valiant effort falls short in CCIW opener

Carroll suffers heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carroll University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Carthage College 1-0 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener at Art Keller Field on Saturday night.
It was the second one-goal loss of the season for Carroll, which remains on a determined quest for its first victory of the year but dropped to 0-8-1 overall.
Carthage, which improved to 4-4 overall, responded with what became the eventual winning goal as junior midfielder Jeff Montemayor scored on header following a corner kick from senior midfielder Adrian Herrera at the 68:52 mark.
Despite being outshot 20-14 in the physical battle, Carroll demonstrated its toughness by maintaining an 8-6 shot-on-goal advantage.
Junior defender Issey Valadez (Milwaukee, Wis.) generated three shots on goal for the Pioneers, who were coming off a challenging 7-0 road loss to No. 2-ranked University of Chicago. Junior forward Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain) had two with freshman midfielder Charlie Shaver (Waukesha, Wis.) and freshman midfielder Jason Sanderfoot (New London, Wis.) each adding one.
Freshman goalkeeper Peter Villafuerte (Milwaukee, Wis.) registered five saves in playing the entire 90 minutes for the Pioneers.
