Pioneers earn first conference victory of the season

Strong fourth quarter powers Carroll in CCIW road victory over North Park

CHICAGO, Ill. - Sophomore running back Isaac Allen (Monroe, Wis.) rushed nine times for 45 yards and two touchdowns, including what proved to be the game-winner on a 5-yard run with 14:55 remaining, as the Carroll University football team defeated North Park University 26-14 in a rain-soaked College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin showdown at Holmgren Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
It was the first conference victory of the season for Carroll, which snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 1-5 in the league standings and 2-5 overall.
Tied 14-14 after three quarters, the Pioneers responded to the challenge by scoring 12 unanswered points over the course of the final 15 minutes.
The game-winning four-play, 14-yard drive was set up as the result of a critical recovered fumble by senior defensive back Peter Dombai (Chicago, Ill.) at the North Park 14-yard line.
The key, momentum shifting drive included a 2-yard run by sophomore wide receiver Alex Kujawa (Oshkosh, Wis.), a 4-yard run from junior running back Austin Leitzinger (Winnebago, Ill.) and a 3-yard run by sophomore back-up quarterback John Taylor (Villa Park, Ill.) - setting the stage for Allen's determined fourth-down-and-one conversion run into the end zone.
Taylor followed with a 5-yard touchdown run to cap a six-play, 42-yard drive with 4:17 left in the fourth quarter for Carroll, which amassed 16 first downs and 308 yards of total offense - 218 yards coming behind its rushing attack.
The Pioneers continued to showcase their poise, focus and progress by converting on 3 of 5 red-zone opportunities.
Carroll collected the first points of the game as junior starting quarterback Michael Johnson (West Allis, Wis.) scored on a 2-yard run to with 10:12 left remaining in the second quarter - capping a confidence-building eight-play, 44-yard drive.
North Park answered to tie the game on a 29-yard pass from junior quarterback Grant Borsch to senior tight end Na'im Smith with 7:29 left in the first half.
Carroll extended the lead to 14-7 as Allen scored on an 8-yard run with 10:14 remaining in the third quarter.
North Park battled back to tie the game a final time as Borsch connected with freshman wide receiver Stefan Giminski on a 63-yard TD pass with 8:43 left in the third quarter.
Leitzinger rushed 18 times for 53 yards for the Pioneers, who averaged 4.2 yards per play. Kujawa followed with five attempts for 54 yards and hauled in four catches for 45 yards.
Junior linebacker Justin Kontny (Milwaukee, Wis.) registered 10 tackles and sophomore lineman Nicholas Brigham (Rockford, Ill.) contributed six tackles with 2.5 sacks to lead the aggressive Carroll defense, which forced three turnovers in the contest. Junior defensive back Logan Heckman (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) had two interceptions and freshman lineman Nick Mantas (Northbrook, Ill.) was credited with 1.5 sacks for the Pioneers.
Borsch completed 11 of 25 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns with an interception for North Park, which dropped to 0-6 in conference and 0-7 overall. Giminski had three catches for 92 yards for the Vikings, who had 10 first downs and 224 total yards.
