Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jeff Hagenau

Late comeback not enough in season finale

Pioneers fall to Millikin 3-2; finish the season with five one-goal conference losses

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University men's soccer team lost to Millikin University 3-2 in a physical, spirited College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin season finale at Schneider Stadium on Saturday night.
It was the fifth conference loss by a one-goal margin and sixth of the season for Carroll, which ended 0-8 in conference and 7-10 overall.
Russell Pruitt scored the unassisted opening goal of the showdown in the eighth minute and Henrik Kronborg finished on an unassisted shot in the 12th minute for Millikin, which concluded the season 2-6 in league and 6-9-1 overall.
Carroll trimmed the deficit to 2-1 as senior midfielder/forward Matt Quint (Waukesha, Wis.) scored off an assist from senior defender Mark Bayer (Waukesha, Wis.) at the 33:33 mark.
Millikin answered with the game-winning shot by Juan Leon at the 48:51 mark for the Big Blue, who were outshot 19-13 but maintained a slim, critical 10-9 shot-on-goal advantage.
Carroll's final point came on an own goal in the 87th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Mathias Holm (Marshfield, Wis.) registered four saves in playing 66 minutes for the Pioneers.
It was the final game for the team's nine seniors including Quint, Bayer, Holm, striker Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain), defender Peanut Taylor (Menomonee Falls, Wis.), defender Issey Valadez (Milwaukee, Wis.), midfielder Austin Schulze (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), midfielder Gabriel Mundo (Highwood, Ill.) and midfielder Jake McChrystal (Stevens Point, Wis.).
"The nine seniors are a special group and while they seemingly didn't accomplish a lot in terms of the win-loss column, they were here throughout four of the more difficult years we've had, never wavered in the way they worked or approached the game, did everything asked of them and helped change the culture of the program," Carroll second-year head coach Derek Marie said. "After the North Park game (referring to the team's gritty, inspired 2-1 CCIW road loss to the No. 15-ranked Vikings), I told them that they were the reason the team will continue to thrive in the years to come. I'm incredibly proud of them.
"We're still a few steps away but continued to make progress by winning seven games this season. There's a great, young group of players coming back so we can only go up from here. Looking at this team, there's something special brewing but its not quite ready yet. We look forward to taking the next step in the seasons to come."
