Grubor’s Near Double-Double Lifts the Pioneers in a Battle

The Pios trailed by as much as 12, but free throws kept them in the contest

Nashville, Tenn. – The Carroll University Women's basketball improved to 5-6 after winning their final game of the Music City Classic against Hamilton College by a score of 58-54. Sophomore guard Sierra Grubor finished with a team high 15 points and nine rebounds, including four of the team's last five points scored in the fourth quarter. Kate Christian and Brooke Foster came off the bench and added seven points each, including three assists for Christian.

The Pioneers only were 32.8% from the field (19-58 FGM), but made their free throws where it counted, going 16-20 (80% FTM), including 9-11 in the second half. The women dominated the paint for the second straight game, outscoring the Continentals 26-18, in addition to outscoring them 10-6 in the second quarter.

The first half ended tied 26 a piece with both teams dueling. Katie Evans gave the Pioneers their first lead in the first quarter off a jumper in the paint. Evans helped keep the Pioneers with a three late in the first after Hamilton led by five. The Continentals started the second quarter with a 8-0 run through the first two and a half minutes. The Pioneers had enough, and finished the second quarter with a 16-4 run led by Grubor, Foster, and Christian adding four points each.

The third quarter began with another battle, Theresa Wichser and Hailey Herriges knocked down threes to keep the scores close, and finished the third quarter up five thanks to Grubor free throws. Hamilton had regained the lead with three minutes to spare in the final quarter before Grubor took over to help the Pioneers finish the game up four. The 8-3 run for the Pioneers would prove to be enough as they moved one game closer to .500 on the season.

The Pioneers will return to Van Male Field House to take on CCIW rival Elmhurst College after the new year on January 4. Stay up to date on Carroll women's basketball this season by going online to www.gopios.com, or by following the Pioneers on Facebook (Carroll University Athletics), Twitter (@pio_athletics), and Instagram (@pio_athletics).
