Carroll claims first victory of season

Pioneers generate most goals in a single game since Oct. 4, 2014

Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Senior forward Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain) scored two second-half goals, including what became the game-winner on a header at the 51:14 mark, as the Carroll University men's soccer team defeated Coe College 5-2 in a nonconference game Sunday afternoon.
It was the first victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 1-1 overall.
The dominant road victory took on added significance as it was the first early-season victory since Sept. 3, 2016 (a 3-2 overtime victory versus Saint John's University) and the highest single-game goal total generated by the Pioneers since October 4, 2014 (an 8-0 home-field Midwest Conference shutout of Cornell College).
Tied 2-2 at the intermission, Carroll responded with three unanswered second-half goals to ensure a victory.
Senior midfielder Gabriel Mundo (Highwood, Ill.), freshman midfielder/defender Ryan Coughlin (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and freshman midfielder/defender Jack Daly (Darien, Ill.) each added an unassisted goal for the Pioneers, who outshot Coe 26-8 in the contest - maintaining a 10-5 shot-on-goal advantage.
Sophomore Peter Villafuerte (Milwaukee, Wis.) and freshman Heath Anderson (Appleton, Wis.) split time at goalkeeper, combining for three saves.
Sophomore midfielder Matthew Joseph and freshman midfielder/forward Andrew Burdick each contributed a goal for Coe, which dropped to 0-2 overall.
