Carroll falls in CCIW opener

Pioneers struggle in conference road loss to in-state rival Carthage College

KENOSHA, Wis. - Sophomore wide receiver Alex Kujawa (Oshkosh, Wis.) finished with a team-high six catches for 69 yards and scored on a 10-yard pass from senior back-up quarterback Treylon Anderson (Baker, La.) with 2:43 remaining but the Carroll University football team lost to Carthage College 36-7 in a windy, rain-soaked College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon.
It was the first loss of the season for Carroll, which dropped to 1-1 overall following the 3 hour, 20-minute battle of in-state rivals.
The game took on historical significance as it was the 30th meeting between the longstanding programs with Carthage capturing the rivarly's prestigious Civil War musket for the fourth consecutive year since Carroll rejoined the ranks of the CCIW in 2016.
The Red Men, who earned their first victory of the season to improve to 1-1 overall, scored 29 unanswered points in the first half - including 22 points in what proved to be a decisive second quarter.
The contest was delayed for a 40-minute stretch as the result of lightning with :58 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Sophomore running back Dana Fontenot rushed for a career-high 113 yards and touchdown runs of 2 and 7 yards for Carthage, which amassed 15 first downs and 330 yards of total offense - 215 yards coming on the ground.
Carroll junior starting quarterback Michael Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis.) was under heavy fire for most of the afternoon, completing 14 of 24 passes for 118 yards and enduring four sacks in leading the spread offense for the Pioneers, who had 10 first downs and 140 total yards.
Carroll's opening drive of the game ultimately set the tone for the rest of the day.
The Pioneers took possession on their own 23-yard line, methodically drove the ball downfield 10 plays later to the Carthage 10-yard line but fell victim to a costly false start penalty, followed by a sack resulting in a missed 42-yard field goal attempt with 8:01 left in the first quarter.
Carthage promptly answered with a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive of its own to seize the momentum and never trailed.
Junior linebacker Justin Kontny (Milwaukee, Wis.) registered a team-high nine tackles and sophomore defensive back Johnathan Rau (West Allis, Wis.) had seven tackles for the Carroll defense. Junior defensive back Tyler Baird (Caledonia, Ill.) and junior defensive lineman Adam Miller (Manteno, Ill.) each contributed five tackles with junior defensive lineman Nate McMillan (Beloit, Wis.) and freshman defensive lineman Nick Mantas (Northbrook, Ill.) each adding a sack. Sophomore Carson Roseleip (Oconomowoc, Wis.) punted 10 times, averaging 38.3 yards.
