Young Pioneers learn in difficult road loss

Carroll struggles to finish in nonconference battle with Ripon

RIPON, Wis. - The Carroll University women's soccer team lost to Ripon College 2-0 in a nonconference game at Prairie Field on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second frustrating, shutout road loss to a former Midwest Conference rival this season for Carroll, which entered the matchup riding the momentum of a five-game unbeaten streak (including four victories and a draw) but dropped to 4-2-1 overall.
The game remained scoreless at the intermission but Ripon answered with two pressure-packed goals over the course of the final 45 minutes - including the game-winning unassisted shot by senior forward Jacie Verstegen at the 46:32 mark.
Senior forward Paige Pierce converted an unassisted goal within the final minute to ensure a victory for Ripon, which improved to 2-5 overall.
Carroll outshot the Red Hawks 13-9 in the contest (including 10 corner kicks and maintained a 6-4 shot-on-goal advantage) but couldn't finish on several golden scoring opportunities.
Sophomore forward Erika Hess (Green Bay, Wis.) generated two shots on goal with sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Zanon (Waukesha, Wis.), senior defender Lisa Harwardt (Lake Zurich, Ill.), junior midfielder/defender Cali Stephenson (Geneva, Ill.) and freshman midfielder/forward Simone Lippmann (Lindenhurst, Ill.) each adding an attempt.
Senior goalkeeper Christina O' Block (Libertyville, Ill.) registered two saves in playing the entire 90 minutes for the Pioneers.
Ripon junior goalkeeper Stefani Zeiger had six critical saves to help preserve a shutout.
