Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jeff Hagenau

Pioneers continue to learn in challenging home opener

Weeks scores goal in 88th minute as Carroll falls to high-powered Concordia University Wisconsin 3-1

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Challenging early-season nonconference matchups can often force a hungry team to play with a heightened sense of urgency and help accelerate the learning process.
The Carroll University men's soccer team experienced that firsthand as it lost to high-powered Concordia University Wisconsin 3-1 in a home opener at Schneider Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was the second nonconference loss of the early season for Carroll, which dropped to 1-2 overall.
Concordia collected the first goal of the contest as freshman forward Ivan Cuellar scored on an unassisted shot in the eighth minute.
Carroll appeared to have a golden opportunity to tie the game at the 38:51 mark but it was short lived as sophomore midfielder Charlie Shaver's (Waukesha, Wis.) aggressive, hard-lining shot bounced off the far left post.

CUW, which outshot the Pioneers 10-8 including a 6-3 shot-on-goal margin, extended the lead to 2-0 as the result of what became a decisive Carroll own goal at the 50:25 mark.
Freshman forward Gilberto Gomez added an unassisted goal in the 80th minute for the Falcons, who improved to 2-0 overall after advancing to the second round of the playoffs last season.
Freshman defender Vinny Weeks (Shorewood, Wis.) scored off an assist from senior defender Issey Valadez (Milwaukee, Wis.) at the 87:30 mark for Carroll.

Freshman goalkeeper Heath Anderson (Appleton, Wis.) registered three saves in playing the entire 90 minutes for the Pioneers.
Despite the home-field setback, Carroll second-year head coach Derek Marie was quick to point out that his team continued to make strides with the effort.
"We have this weird combination where we're both an older team and a very young team at the same time so we are still attempting to figure out where the equilibrium is between the two," said Marie, a former standout player for the Pioneers. "At some point, we will find that proper balance and have the right guys on the field. That said, it was still disappointing to come out on the wrong end because we had our share of opportunities and it could've easily been 3-1 in our favor.
"Being young with seven or eight freshmen on the field at times tonight, there were a lot of coachable moments which was exciting. For me, the injection of the freshmen into the lineup has really worked to reinvigorate the program and restore some of the passion in our older players. Even though it didn't work out, this was the type of game we can learn from. I was proud of our fight and effort.
"The future is very bright but we need to play in the now, make the necessary adjustments and be ready to bounce back against Beloit on Saturday."
