Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University Pioneers completed their 2019-2020 season in style on Saturday afternoon with a commanding win over Millikin University, 81-65.
Sierra Grubor finished with 22 points, 19 of which came in the first half and a team high seven rebounds.
Theresa Wichser knocked down six threes on her way to 18 points, and Sierra Cruz handed out six assists on top of her 16 points.
The Pioneers, who finished 9-16 (4-12 CCIW), showed their signs of dominance again tonight, after jumping to another hot start against the Big Blue. The women hit 58% of their shots tonight from the field, including 72% in the first quarter. They took advantage of Millikin blunders, scoring 26 points off turnovers and scoring 32 points in the paint. The strong bench were able to take it easy tonight with the starters generating most of the push.
Kate Christian led the bench with seven points and creating five steals.
The big blue hit an early three pointer to take a one point lead, but that was the last lead they saw the entire game. The women jumped out to a 19-4 run before Millikin cut the lead again with another three. Grubor and Wichser scored 12 combined during that run. Grubor took over in the second, shooting 6-7 from the floor and adding a free throw for 13 in the quarter, after an and-one in the paint. The women took a 14 point lead into halftime.
After a slow start, Wichser knocked down a three to bring the lead up to 16 and to keep it out of Millikin's reach. Wichser hit two more threes in a matter of three minutes to keep the women at large. After some more back and forth, the women were looking over a 19 point lead with a quarter to go. Katie Evans (5 pts) followed by a Cruz jumper stunned the Big Blue. Cruz scored the last five points for the Pioneers, shooting 4-5 at the charity stripe on the afternoon.
