Fond Du Lac, Wis. – The Carroll University Pioneers dominated from start to finish in the 70-30 dominant win over the Marian Panthers on Saturday.
Kayla Stefka finished with a game high 13 points.
Theresa Wichser broke the women's basketball school record for most three-pointers made in a season with 53 made.
Megan Madsen pulled in a tied for career high six rebounds, and
Kate Christian and
Amanda Hooks each dished out four assists, a career high for Hooks.
The bench recorded 44 of the 70 team points today, outscoring Marian's bench by 31 points. The Pioneers capitalized on 35 Panthers turnovers, collecting 18 steals and scoring 27 points off turnovers. The three point shooting percentage on the afternoon was just 27% (7-26 3PM), but the dominant 20 point spread in the paint kept the Pioneers in good standing.
The Pios kicked things off from the jump, going on 12 point scoring run before the Panthers could even make a shot. The women didn't flinch, and continued to pour in eight more points before the buzzer sounded for the end of the first quarter. Wichser sank her first three of the day to tie her previous record of 52 three-pointers made in the first quarter. Her next and final three of the afternoon became the school record 53
rd made with 8:06 remaining in the second quarter. The Panthers started to come alive in the second quarter, sinking two straight threes before a Pioneer time out halted their momentum. Stefka added the next points for the Pios with a fast break layup, followed another fast break layup from
Brooke Foster on the next possession. The women took a 23 point lead into halftime.
The Panthers tried to jump out early at the Pios, but
Megan Madsen swatted a shot away in their first possession. Madsen would later go to score an and-one layup, good for a three-point play. Foster sank another three in final :30 seconds of the third quarter to bring the Pio lead to 30. Both teams started slow in the final 10:00 of action, until an 8-3 run by the Pios led to the clearing of the Pioneers' bench. Freshman
Jess Prater knocked in a three and another bucket to record a season high seven points in the fourth quarter.
The women return to the CCIW in their final road game of the regular season. They will travel to Elmhurst, Illinois to take on the Bluejays. Last time out, the Bluejays stunned the Pioneers, falling 55-56. The Pioneers outshot the Bluejays, but came up short in the final seconds.
