Women’s Basketball Bounces Back with Big Win

Three Pios finish with 16+ Points

Rock Island, Ill. – The Carroll University women's basketball team closed the game on a strong fourth quarter, to grab a victory at Augustana by the score of 73-64. 12 of Brooke Foster's 16 points came in the fourth quarter while shooting 7-9 at the free-throw line. Katie Rohner finished with a season-high 18 points on 7-13 shooting from the floor to go along with four steals.

The Pioneers (6-4, 6-4 CCIW) shot 39.3% from behind the arc, with five three-pointers coming from Theresa Wichser (16 PTS, 5-7 3PM) and three from Rohner. The Pioneers capitalized on 29 Viking turnovers with 32 points. Despite being outrebounded, Carroll scored 30 points in the paint. The Pios still managed to pull in 23 rebounds, including eight from Elizabeth Behrndt (9 PTS, 8 REB, 4 STL). Carroll's bench added 10 points including six from Lauren Soyke.

The Vikings took a 7-2 lead through the first four minutes of the game, but Marissa Murray (4 PTS, 6 REB) scored off a turnover to cut the lead to three. Augie worked the lead up to nine with 1:45 remaining when Wichser hit her first three-pointer of the game soon after. The Pios ended the first quarter down six points, while Augustana was shooting 57.1% from three. Behrndt started a 6-0 run for the Pios, capped off by a field goal from Foster. Wichser grabbed the lead with her second three-ball at the 6:04 mark. The women continued to stay hot, taking a five-point lead off a Rohner three-point basket. Wichser and Rohner ended the first half with two-more three-pointers to take a seven-point lead into halftime. The Pios shot 9-14 FGM in that 23-point second quarter.

Both teams started the second half slow, but Soyke stopped the Pio scoreless streak with her first points of the game off a turnover. Katie Evans (2 PTS, 5 AST) brought the lead to double digits with a fast break layup assisted by Rohner with 4:29 remaining in the third quarter. The Vikings were able to cut a 12-point lead to 1 with an 11-0 run to end the third quarter. Wichser started the second half with a four-point play to bring the lead back to five. Wichser later hit another shot from three-point land to take the Carroll lead up to 11 with 5:35 remaining. Augustana found themselves down only five with 1:38 left, but Rohner and Foster iced the game with four free-throws in the final minute.

Carroll will host Augustana on Saturday at 2 PM for the final regular-season game. A Pioneer win would help in the effort to secure a top-four seed in the CCIW Conference Tournament. The Pios' last win against Augie in Van Male came in 2019.
