Behrndt’s Double-Double Powers Pioneers to Victory

Wichser cracks the top three all-time in three-pointers made in Carroll History.

Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University Pioneers women's basketball team fought adversity and came away victorious over the undefeated North Park University Vikings, 57-49. Elizabeth Behrndt recorded her first career double-double, with 12 points, 12 rebounds, to go along with three blocks. Theresa Wichser (11 pts, 3 ast) broke into the top three all-time in three-point field goals made tonight with her second three of the game, she finished with nine points.

"I wouldn't have gotten there without my teammates setting me up with their passes," said Wichser after founding out she moved into the top three, "A lot of this goes to them". The Pios (3-1, 3-1 CCIW) hit 50% of their three-pointers today, on 5-10 attempts. Turnovers plagued both teams, with 29 for the Pios and 21 for the Vikings, but Carroll capitalized with 19 points off turnovers compared to their 16. The Pios held North Park to only 25 rebounds while hauling in 36 of our own. Foul trouble became an issue for the Vikings in the end, causing 20 to give the Pios 18 free-throw attempts.

The Vikings quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead forcing Head Coach Lindsay Schultz to call a time out. Behrndt scored her first bucket of the game with a layup to cut the lead to three. A steal from Kate Christian (8 pts, 5ast, 4 reb) led to a fast break three from Wichser, and eventually one from Katie Evans (5 pts, 5 reb) as well. Brooke Foster (12 pts, 4 reb, 3 stl) hit two free-throws in the second quarter to bring the lead down to one, followed by a game tying free-throw from Katie Rohner (5pts, 3 reb). The Pios went on a 11-4 run to finish the quarter after those free-throws, including Wichser's three to push her into the top-three all time.

North Park's Jayla Johnson started the second half with a layup, but Foster hit a three from Wichser to keep the lead high. Kayla Stefka (4 pts, 3 reb) and Behrndt went back and forth with layups to bring the lead to a game-high 11 points. A 6-0 Viking run was stopped by a Foster layup to keep the Pios up. The Vikings cut the lead to four at the end of the quarter. Wichser netted a three from Christian to go up five with 8:37 left in the game. Johnson from NPU brought the game to a one-point Pio lead with 5:42 remaining. Baskets by Christian, Evans, and Rohner kept the game out of reach with two minutes remaining. The Vikings fouled four times within the final minute to send the Pioneers to the line, with the dagger free-throws coming from Foster and Wichser.

The women will face Elmhurst again next week, Starting Thursday, Feb. 11 in at home. The Pios split the first series with the Bluejays 1-1 with both teams winning on their home courts.
