WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team took a thriller into the final ten minutes of the game before sealing the winning goal against Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday night. The Pioneers won 2-1 against the Warriors, thanks to a penalty kick from
Anthony Buffington.
The Pioneers (4-1, 0-0 CCIW) have won four straight since dropping the season opener, and it's the second consecutive game with over 30 shots.
Ricky Perez tallied a team-high five shots, while
Ryan Coughlin,
Josh Gonzaga, and
Julius Marks totaled four each. Carroll nearly held the Warriors shot less in this game, but allowed one shot and one goal to the Warriors.
The Pios came out hot in the first half, shooting the lights out with 12 shots and three on goal.
Zane Walters, Xavior Bishops, and Perez all had chances threatening the goalkeeper. The Warriors broke away in the 50
th minute for an unassisted goal that got past a charging
Tyler Hanson. Coughlin had two great opportunities to score the equalizer but two great saves by the WLC keeper kept the game at 0-1.
Coughlin took a free kick at about the 10-yard line and placed a ball perfectly for
Ethan Kratzer to score the equalizer with his head. In the 84
th minute, a foul within the WLC box took down
Parker Nimmer, and Carroll was awarded a PK. Buffington stepped up to take the shot and nailed the shot mid-height right side of the goal. Carroll kept the ball away long enough in the final minutes to keep the score in favor of the Pioneers.
Carroll keeps the homestand rolling with another home game scheduled for Wednesday, September 15 against Ripon College. Carroll hasn't had a matchup with the Red Hawks since 2015 but holds an 11-3 record since 2001.
