NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Carroll University men's swimming and diving team defeated North Central College 72-12 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin dual meet Saturday afternoon.
It was the second conference dual meet victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 2-0 in the league standings and 2-2 overall.
Edward McConnaha won the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.25) and 1,650 freestyle (19:48.02) and swam the second leg of the first-place 400 freestyle relay to lead Carroll, which showcased its depth as it captured 11 events with the dominant performance to begin the new year.
Zach Mirza followed with victories in the 50 freestyle (24.07) and 100 freestyle (55.06) for the Pioneers.
Other first-place individual finishers were: Thaddeus Scott, 400 indvidual medley (5:00.22); Brennen McClay, 200 freestyle (2:00.59); Augusto Ureta, 100 butterfly (1:00.64); Cash Schwemer, 100 backstroke (1:11.42) and David Gonzales Jr., 100 breaststroke (1:09.62).
The 400 medley relay (consisting of Scott, Robin Wallmersperger, Gonzales and McClay) won in 3:59.03. The Pioneers' added a victory in the 400 freestyle relay (Ureta, McConnaha, Gonzales and McClay), finishing in 3:35.38.
"The swimmers performed very well at this meet (noting that the men's and women's teams earned dual-meet victories on the same day for the first time this season) even with the highly intense training over the past two weeks and were able to get their hand to the wall first," said Carroll head coach Guy Gniotczynski, whose team claimed its first conference victory versus Millikin earlier this season. "We are very excited for our final home meet and Senior Day recognition on Jan. 22."
Carroll is scheduled to host former Midwest Conference rival Beloit College in a non-conference dual meet at Van Male Natatorium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
