WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University swimming and diving program's upperclassmen (CUC) defeated the Carroll lowerclassmen (CLC) 149-107 in a combined men's/women's intrasquad dual meet at Van Male Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
The challenging, spirited Senior Day competition, originally scheduled as a nonconference dual with former Midwest Conference rival Beloit College, was switched to an intrasquad format (honoring Grace Fanshaw, Ingrid Hay, Madeline Nelson and Emily Wong).
The final team scores were determined by combining the scores of the Carroll upperclassmen (men/women) versus the Carroll lowerclassmen (men/women).
Kara Loy won the 50-yard freestyle (26.75) and 100 freestyle (59.46), anchored the winning 200 medley relay (also including Alyssa Szcezpaniak, Brooke Wills and Wong) and swam the opening leg of the first-place 200 freestyle relay (also comprised of Anina Lee, Hay and Wong) as the Carroll upperclassmen defeated the Carroll lowerclassmen 97-47 in the women's portion of the meet.
Alyssa Szcezpaniak followed with individual victories in the 100 backstroke (1:03.83) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.98) and was second in the 50 freestyle (27.41) for the Carroll upperclassmen, who captured eight events.
Other individual victories for the Carroll upperclassmen were: Wong, 200 individual medley (2:19.06) and Lee, 200 freestyle (2:28.28).
Chopper Ceshker won the 500 freestyle (5:56.40) and 1,000 freestyle (12:18.10) for the Carroll lowerclassmen.
"We had to go with the flow for this meet and the swimmers all stepped up to the challenge and had a great time racing," Carroll head coach Guy Gniotczynski said. "This year's senior class has had a challenging past two seasons and remains dedicated to their academics, the program and the school. They have really stepped up their leadership and continue to bring the team closer together as we build moving forward."
Carroll is scheduled to compete in the Wisconsin Private Schools Invitational (hosted by Carthage College) on Jan. 29.
