WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team picked up its first win over Illinois Wesleyan on program history on Saturday, outscoring the Titans 2-1.
Josh Gonzaga scored both goals in the game for Carroll, one in each half.
The Pioneers (7-6, 2-2 CCIW) held the advantage on shots 16-13 over IWU. Gonzaga,
Marti Solanellas Vilella and
Nico Hinten Llorens all tallied three shot attempts for the team.
Tyler Hanson got the win with three saves added. The Pios and Titans tied on corner kicks with six all, and Carroll held possession of the ball for over half of the game.
Gonzaga scored within the first five minutes of the contest, as Hinten Llorens passed him the look at goal. Both teams traded shots for a large part of the first half until the Titans played a poor pass in the backline to beat Hanson in the goal.
After two corner kick attempts, and a shot wide left by Hinten Llorens, Gonzaga received a pass from
Zane Walters in the 52
nd minute for Carroll's second goal. The Pos peppered the Titans for the next three minutes with more shot attempts. The Titans took their second shot of the second half in the 80
th minute. Carroll blocked all of the Titan's final shot attempts in the final minutes to hold on for the victory.
The Pios will next face off with the Wheaton Thunder back at Schneider Stadium on Wednesday, October 12.
