STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Carroll University women's tennis team finished its season with challenging, hard-fought back-to-back nonconference dual meets at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's University Courts on Saturday, defeating former longtime Midwest Conference rival St. Norbert College 8-1 but losing to host UW-Stevens Point 7-2.
The season-ending road effort completed a successful year for Carroll, which won three of its final four matches to finish 8-10 overall in dual-meet competition.
vs. St. Norbert
Maya Gaedtke won a spirited match at No. 1 singles to help lead Carroll, defeating St. Norbert's Nicole Pfotenhauer 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-5.
It was the first No. 1-singles victory of the season for Gaedtke, a junior from Antigo, Wis., who completed a highly productive year by claiming victories in two of her final three matches to finish 7-11 overall.
Other individual highlights included a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory by
Kaitlin Brandl at No. 3 singles and a 6-0, 6-1 victory from
Haley Berand at No. 4 singles.
Brandl, a sophomore from Nashotah, Wis., finished the season 5-1 overall. Berand, a promising freshman from Crystal Lake, Ill. finished with a 2-2 record.
Gaedtke combined with
Ashley LaBelle, a junior from Mukwonago, Wis., for an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles for the Pioneers. Brandl and Berand combined for an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.
vs. UW-Stevens Point
LaBelle came up just short in a hard-fought matchup at No. 1 singles, falling to UW-Stevens Point's Faith Leithold 4-6, 6-4 (10-5).
LaBelle, who finished the season by claiming victories in four of her final five matches, end the year 10-9 overall.
Madison Ostrander claimed a victory at No. 4 singles for the Pioneers, defeating Kaylee Woelfel in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Ostrander, a sophomore from Batavia, Ill., also reached the 10-victory season mark to finish with a 10-11 overall record.
The Pioneers finished with a .490 winning percentage in the singles category this year (50-52 overall).
Carroll's other victory came at No. 1 doubles as Gaedtke and LaBelle won 8-5 to cap the season with two straight wins and finish with a 5-2 record.
The Pioneers' doubles teams completed the year with a .560 winning percentage (30-23 in dual competition).
