Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Carroll's Season Come to a Heartbreaking Close

WAUKESHA, Wis - Carroll men's soccer had a heartbreaking loss on Saturday evening, tying Illinois Wesleyan 1-1 in the CCIW quarterfinals before losing in penalty shootouts 4-3. Carroll (9-4-5, 5-2-2 CCIW) outshot Illinois Wesleyan(9-4-4, 3-4-1 CCIW ) by a 16-7 margin, with both teams tallying three shots on goal.

It was  a defensive battle in the first half, with Carroll only getting two shots and the Titans being stymied by the Pioneers, getting no looks at the goal. Just under two minutes into the second half, the Titans cracked the scoreboard with a 25-yard shot past the Pioneer goalkeeper to break the tie. The Pioneers responded just eight minutes later with a goal by Matthew Meke in the 54th minute. The goal was Meke's third of the season and came on a rebound shot off of the crossbar by Josh Gonzaga. The game went through two overtimes with the score knotted 1-1. In PKs, Carroll missed their first two attempts before Gonzaga and Thomas Rodriguez both sent theirs to the back of the net. Raphael Rinke made the seventh attempt to give Carroll the edge. Illinois Wesleyan made their seventh and eighth attempts as they closed the game out and ended Carroll's season.

Gonzaga led the team with five shots and Dorchester contributed three more with two shots on goal to lead the Pios. Jason Brunger got the start at goalie for Carroll, playing the full 110 minutes and allowing one goal and recording two saves. Uriel Garcia took the field between the pipes for the shootout attempts, allowing 4 goals and making four crucial saves.

Carroll's season comes to an end with the most wins since 2014 and includes the team's first postseason home game since 2011 when the program was a member of the Midwest Conference. Senior Josh Gonzaga ends his illustrious career with four all-CCIW selections and sits in the Carroll record books with 63 career points and 27 career goals, which are good for 6th and fifth place, respectively.
