NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Carroll's women's basketball team led from start to finish Saturday afternoon, en route to a convincing 85-58 road victory against CCIW-foe North Central (IL). The Pioneers shot at least 50 percent in all but one quarter, finishing the game shooting 51 percent (35-69), while also shooting 25 percent (4-16) from 3-point range and 85 percent (11-13) from the free throw line. Carroll also limited North Central to just 36 percent (21-59) shooting, including 13 percent (2-15) from 3-point range and 58 percent (14-24) from the line.
Carroll (6-4, 2-1 CCIW) scored the game's first eight points, with the first four coming from
Olivia Rangel in the first minute of the contest. The Pioneers would extend that lead to 15-2 midway through the quarter, before a buzzer-beating tip-in by
Julia Lokker gave the Pioneers a 15-point lead entering the second period. Carroll would lead by double digits for the remainder of the day, taking a 51-27 lead into halftime.
The Pios nearly scored as many points in the paint as North Central did in the game, outscoring the Cardinals 56-34 in the paint, while also outscoring them on fast break points by a 15-9 margin. Carroll also held a 45-31 rebounding advantage, while forcing 12 Cardinal turnovers.
Emilie Wizner led all scorers with 21 points, while Rangel finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Natalie Gricius added 16 points, while Lokker and
Chloe Halverson each scored 10 off the bench.
North Central (5-4, 1-1 CCIW) was led by Biz Daly's 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Elle Sutter added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Carroll will try to keep this momentum on Friday when they'll travel to St. Norbert College. That non-conference game will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center in De Pere, Wis.
