MEQUON, Wis. – The Carroll University women's tennis team began the 2024 season with a resounding 7-0 win over Concordia (Wis.) on Friday evening.
The Pioneers (1-0) got off to a hot start, winning all three doubles matches. At one doubles sophomore Kate Trifilio and junior
Makayla Counsell defeated junior Peyton Morgan and freshman Morgan Chyla 6-3. Continuing the dominating doubles performance was the sophomore duo
Natasa Pupovac and
Gracie Niebler defeating Concordia's Abigail Schwartz and Payton Steward 6-2 at the second doubles position. Finally, at three doubles
Erin Horzewski and
Laurel Nelson defeated the Concordia tandem of Ruth Dolde and Jeanie Eisen 6-1. Carroll secured the sole doubles point by winning all three of those matches.
Carroll's dominance followed them into singles as they claimed victories in all six positions. Pupovac led off the victories at one taking on Morgan and winning in commanding fashion, 6-1 6-1. At two singles, Trifilio continued to the victories with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chyla. Counsell won a tough-fought 6-4, 6-4 match over Steward at three singles. Niebler overcame a slow start to defeat Schwartz 4-6, 6-0, 10-4 in a third set tiebreaker at four singles. Horzewski also claimed a victory at five singles against Dolde 6-2 6-2. Senior
Emily Stern defeated Eisen 6-2, 6-3 in the sixth position.
The Pioneers look to continue their winning ways on Saturday when they'll open their conference season against North Central (Ill.) at 9 a.m.
