Carroll Continues Winning Ways

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's basketball team extended their season-best winning streak to eight games Saturday afternoon with an 86-74 victory over Millikin University. That marks the Pioneers' longest win streak since last season, when they team won nine straight on two different occasions.

Carroll (14-5, 9-1 CCIW) was in control for the majority of the game, which featured just one lead change. The Pios shot an efficient 59 percent (30-51) from the field, including 27 percent (3-11) from 3-point range, while Millikin (7-13, 6-5 CCIW) converted 45 percent (27-60) of their shots, while shooting 48 percent (10-21) from behind the arc. Carroll won the turnover battle for the ninth consecutive game, turning 24 Millikin miscues into 21 points. The Pios also scored 16 fast break points, while outscoring the Big Blue in the paint by a 46-28 margin.

The Pioneers took control of the game early, scoring the first four points and leading by as many as nine in the opening quarter. Millikin would battle back to take their first lead of the night mid-way through the second quarter, using an 11-5 run to go ahead by one on a 3-pointer by Bella Dudley. The Pios answered with a Katie Barger layup on the ensuing possession to grab the lead right back, before taking an eight-point lead into halftime.

Carroll continued to excel in the second half, which saw them score 49 points. They used a 9-0 run, capped by a Natalie Palzkill layup, to take their largest lead of 18 points mid-way through the third period. Millikin would cut that lead to seven in the final minutes of the fourth, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the night.

Olivia Rangel led Carroll with a game-high 25 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while also recording seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. That moves her into second-place in program history for career steals (248), which is just 12 shy of the school record. Her 363 career assists are 14 shy of the school record, while she is now just seven points shy of becoming the fifth player in program history to reach the 1,500-point plateau. Natalie Gricius added 19 points for the Pios, while Emilie Wizner scored 14, which included a pair of 3-pointers.

Matayla Tellis led Millikin with 21 points, making 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range. Kyleigh Block added 12 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers, while Nikkel Johnson scored 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench.

The win now sets up a Wednesday night showdown with second-ranked and undefeated Illinois Wesleyan, who currently sits just one game ahead of the Pioneers for first place in the CCIW standings. That game will begin at 7 p.m. from Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
