WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season Saturday with a 5-2 loss to Wheaton College. The Pioneers entered the match having already secured a spot in the CCIW Tournament, which will be played in May.
Carroll got off to a strong start in doubles play, winning two of the three matches. Natasa Pupovac and Katherine Trifilio battled to a 7-6 (3) victory at No. 1 doubles, while Madison Siminski and Megan Trifilio added a 6-4 victory at No. 3. Mia Franke and Gracie Niebler fell 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
The Pioneers' lone victory in singles came from Mia Franke at No. 4. After taking the opening set 7-5, Franke dropped the second 6-3 before responding with a 6-0 third-set victory to close out the match.
Carroll also pushed Wheaton to three sets in each of the top three singles matches. Natasa Pupovac, Katherine Trifilio and Megan Trifilio each won a set before ultimately falling, while Wheaton added straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 to secure the 5-2 final.
The Pioneers battled hard against the top team in the conference, closing the fall season with a very competitive match. With their CCIW Tournament berth already secured prior to the finale, Carroll will turn its attention toward the conference tournament in May.
