WAUKESHA, Wis. – A blocked punt returned for a touchdown and a pair of long second-quarter touchdown runs proved to be the difference Saturday afternoon as Carroll dropped its home opener to UW-Eau Claire, 34-17, at Schneider Stadium. Despite the final score, the Pioneers moved the ball effectively through the air, recording 391 total yards behind a 351-yard passing performance from quarterback Elisha Nieves.
Carroll (1-1) appeared poised for an ideal start after the defense forced UW-Eau Claire to miss a 39-yard field goal on the opening possession. The momentum quickly shifted, however, when the Blugolds blocked a Carroll punt on the Pioneers' first drive and returned it for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead just over four minutes into the contest.
The game's biggest swing came early in the second quarter. After a Carroll interception deep in Eau Claire territory was returned to the Pioneer 33-yard line, the Blugolds needed just one play to find the end zone as Paxton Rothmeier broke free for a 33-yard touchdown run. Less than three minutes later, Rothmeier struck again, this time sprinting 64 yards for another score to push the UW-Eau Claire advantage to 21-0.
Rather than fold, Carroll answered with one of its most explosive drives of the young season. Elisha Nieves connected with Liam Patrick for a 39-yard gain before finding Corey Johnson for a 28-yard touchdown pass three plays later. The quick 75-yard march cut the deficit to 21-7 and provided a spark heading into halftime.
The Pioneers continued to battle throughout the second half, with Nieves leading an efficient passing attack. The junior signal caller completed 32-of-48 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns while spreading the ball to eight different receivers. Patrick turned in a career day with eight receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown, while Aaron Appiah-Kubi added eight catches for 72 yards. Zach Johnson chipped in five receptions for 58 yards, and Marcus Johnson totaled 74 all-purpose yards.
After UW-Eau Claire opened the third quarter with an 80-yard touchdown drive to extend its lead to 28-7, Carroll responded with a methodical eight-play drive highlighted by a 20-yard run from Marcus Johnson. The drive stalled inside the red zone, but Matthew Swink connected on a 36-yard field goal to trim the margin back to 18 points.
A special teams turnover later in the quarter proved costly when the Blugolds recovered a Jahkai Bohannon fumble on a punt return and converted the short field into another field goal for a 31-10 advantage.
The Pioneers made one final push midway through the fourth quarter. Baker recorded an interception that set Carroll up at the UW-Eau Claire 40-yard line. Seven plays later, Nieves found Patrick on a four-yard touchdown pass to make it a two-score game at 31-17 with 9:21 remaining.
UW-Eau Claire answered with a nine-play, clock-draining drive that resulted in a field goal, extending the lead back to 17 points. Carroll's final opportunity was halted when the Blugolds forced and recovered a fumble near midfield, allowing the visitors to run out the remaining clock.
Defensively, Andrew Redmon paced the Pioneers with 10 tackles, while Evan Griffiths added nine stops. Kevin Williams recorded Carroll's lone sack. UW-Eau Claire finished with 453 yards of offense, including 267 rushing yards, while Rothmeier led the visitors with 179 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Carroll held a 20-18 advantage in first downs and controlled possession for nearly 32 minutes, but turnovers and special teams miscues ultimately proved too much to overcome.
The Pioneers will look to rebound as they open conference play next Saturday as they travel to Elmhurst to take on the Bluejays at 6pm.
