WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Carroll University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Wisconsin-Whitewater on Monday afternoon at Robert W. Fiskum Field. The result moves the Pioneers to 1-2-5 on the season.
Facing a Warhawk squad that entered the match at 5-2-1, Carroll's defense stood strong throughout the contest. Wisconsin-Whitewater held a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks, but the Pioneers prevented the home side from finding the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Ava Lewandowski played a key role in the shutout, turning away five shots over the full 90 minutes. Four of her saves came in the second half as Whitewater increased its pressure, including stops on attempts by Brinley Dunsirn, Jasmine Wilson, Tessa Czajkowski Higgins, Rachel Cvikel, and Rowan Severson.
Carroll generated several quality opportunities of its own. Carmella Nowak led the Pioneers with three shots, while Michaela Williamson also recorded three attempts. Ellie Pierson and Harlie Seuser each put a shot on target.
The Pioneers came closest to breaking the scoreless deadlock in the 59th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. However, Nowak's attempt went wide, keeping the match even.
Gabby Courtois, Victoria Crivello, Alexa Karagiannis, Naomy Gonzalez, and Lewandowski each played all 90 minutes as Carroll secured its fifth shutout of the season.
Carroll returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, when it opens CCIW play at Augustana. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Rock Island, Illinois.
