ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Carroll opened CCIW play by earning a point on the road Saturday evening, battling Augustana to a scoreless draw at Thorson-Lucken Field. The tie moved the Pioneers to 2-6-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
The Vikings controlled much of the first-half pressure, holding a 6-2 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes. Carroll goalkeeper Angel Escamilla helped keep the match even, making three saves in the first half, including stops on attempts from Wes Karubas and Matt Donaghey. Augustana generated two corner kicks and several dangerous opportunities but was unable to break through before halftime.
After being limited offensively in the first half, the Pioneers created the better chances following the break. Carroll outshot Augustana 10-5 in the second half and finished the match with a 12-11 advantage in total shots. The Pioneers put six attempts on target, forcing Vikings goalkeeper Elias Banke to make six saves to preserve the shutout.
Obada Altahat led Carroll with four shots, while Nathan Patzer recorded two attempts, including one on target. Liam Stokes, Pablo Segura Larraz, Iskander Sharipov, and Jorge Gonzalez Marrero each put a shot on goal as the Pioneers continued to pressure the Augustana defense throughout the final 45 minutes.
The match became increasingly physical as the second half progressed, with the two teams combining for 25 fouls. The intensity boiled over in the 87th minute when Augustana's Matt Donaghey and Carroll's Christian Meraz were both issued straight red cards. Escamilla also received a straight red card during the sequence, forcing the Pioneers to finish the final minutes with substitute goalkeeper Daniel Gil on the field. Neither side was able to capitalize before the final whistle.
Escamilla finished with three saves over 86:22 in goal before his dismissal, helping Carroll secure its third clean sheet of the season. The Pioneers will look to build on the defensive effort as conference play continues on Wednesday back at Schneider Stadium as they host Carthage at 7pm.
