Upset bid falls short

Box Score (De Pere, Wis.) - The Carroll University men's basketball season came to an end tonight in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament. The Pioneers fell to No. 5 St. Norbert College, 74-68.
 
With 4:37 remaining in the first half, Division III basketball fans were put on "upset alert" as Carroll held a 36-19 lead on a three-pointer from Bryan Nagy. Carroll's lead was generated by 74% shooting from the floor.
 
Trailing 43-31 at 1:26, the once-beaten Green Knights closed out the half on a 5-0 run to pull to within 43-36 at the break and gain some valuable momentum for the second half.
 
In the opening 20 minutes, Carroll connected on 68% of its field goal attempts and was led in scoring by Andrew Nottling and Kevin Hurd with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Carroll pushed its lead to nine points early in the second half but the Midwest Conference Champions slowly began their monumental comeback and eventually tied the score at 54-54 with 10:26 to play, ending an 18-11 SNC run.
 
The lead changed hands twice over the next few minutes until St. Norbert took the lead for good on a three-pointer with 8:06 to play.
 
The Green Knights extended to a five point lead but the Pioneers made one last run and pulled to within 65-64 with 2:15 remaining. St. Norbert would close the game on a 9-4 run to complete the comeback.
 
Nottling finished with a team-high 18 points followed by Hurd's 16. Nagy came off the bench to add 12 points while Kyle Keranen chipped in with 10 points in his MWC Tournament debut.
 
The Pioneers finished the game shooting 53.2% from the field, including 36.4% in the second half.
 
Carroll's season comes to an end at 15-9 under first-year head coach Paul Combs.
