KENOSHA, Wis. - Sophomore forward Rachel Van Sluys (Sheboygan, Wis.) scored off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Cassidy Conner (Paw Paw, Mich.) in the 48th minute but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University women's soccer team lost to Carthage College 2-1 in a cold, rain-soaked College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Art Keller Field on Wednesday evening.
It was the second conference loss of the season and snapped a six-game winning streak for the Pioneers, who dropped to 4-2-1 but remain in sole possession of third place in the highly contested league standings with one regular season game remaining.
Carroll, 13-4-1 overall, is scheduled to face Millikin in the regular-season finale Saturday.
As the game remained tied 1-1 in the second half, Carthage reponded with the winning goal as Lauren Szumski scored off a double assist from Aubrey Quick and Maggie Washelesky in the 70th minute.
Kayla Mcguinness scored on an assist from Taylor Stenmark in the second minute for Carthage, which moved into a tie for fourth place with North Central in conference with a 4-3 record and improved to 10-6 overall.
The Lady Red outshot Carroll 15-7 in the contest, including a critical 9-5 shot-on-goal advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Christina O' Block (Libertyville, Ill.) had six saves for the Pioneers.
