HOLLAND, Mich. - Junior guard Brittany Wald (Antigo, Wis.) had a team-high 15 points, three rebounds, four assists and six steals but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University women's basketball team lost to Franklin College 74-47 in the opening round of the Hope College Tip-Off Tournament at DeVos Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon.
It was the second consecutive nonconference loss for the young, determined Pioneers, who dropped to 0-2 overall.
Franklin, which improved to 1-1 overall, outscored Carroll 30-18 in the first half - highlighted by a critical momentum-building 17-8 run in the opening quarter.
The Grizzlies ultimately put the game out of reach with a decisive 22-17 run in the third quarter.
Freshman guard Caylee Koker (Kenosha, Wis.) contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and six steals for Carroll, which made 14 of 18 free throws, shot 32 percent from field-goal range and converted just one 3-point basket.
Junior forward Morgan Lund (Mondovi, Wis.) followed with seven points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Sara Hartl (Racine, Wis.) had six points for the Pioneers, who committed 36 turnovers - including 21 in the first half.
Senior Emily Alfrey scored a game-high 16 points for Franklin, which shot 45 percent from the field and scored 39 points off of miscues.
