Pios earn key CCIW victory on the road

Keranen, Widdes, Penny propel Carroll in victory over Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. - Senior guard Kyle Keranen (Hartland, Wis.) had a team-high 19 points, six rebounds and two assists to lead the Carroll University men's basketball team to a 75-66 victory over Millikin University in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at the Griswold Center on Saturday evening.
It was the second consecutive conference road victory for Carroll, which is currently tied for second place in the league standings with a 6-4 record and improved to 11-8 overall. 
The Pioneers, who have won three of their last four, remain in the hunt for a prestigious CCIW tournament berth with six games left on the regular-season schedule.
Carroll outscored Millikin 35-28 in the momentum-building first half, including a critical 12-5 run over a six-minute span.
Sophomore point guard Ben Widdes (Rice Lake, Wis.) contributed 15 points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal for Carroll, which made six baskets from 3-point range, 19 of 22 free throws and shot 52.1 percent from the field. Freshman guard Nick Penny (Lake Zurich, Ill.) followed with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Sophomore guard Ray Pierce (Milwaukee, Wis.), freshman forward Kale Maupin (Peotone, Ill.) and freshman guard/forward Charlie Soule (Oregon, Wis.) each added six points for the Pioneers, who outrebounded the Big Blue 33-27 - highlighted by a 29-20 margin on the defensive glass.
Sophomore guard Tyler Pygon scored a game-high 20 points for Millikin, which dropped to 1-9 in conference and 3-16 overall. Sophomore guard Jack Simpson had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Big Blue, who made six 3-pointers, 14 of 23 free throws and shot 41.8 percent from the field.
