Determined Pioneers finish invite with authority

Voltolina, Wilkins star in victory over St. Lawrence

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Dana Voltolina (St. Charles, Ill.) equaled her season high by finishing with 16 kills and two blocks as the Carroll University women's volleyball team defeated St. Lawrence University 25-23, 25-17, 16-25, 25-21 in a nonconference dual to conclude its portion of the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament at North Central College's Gregory Arena on Friday evening.
The victory completed a successful day for Carroll, which won both of its matches in the tournament and improved to 10-15 overall.
It was a significant victory as the Pioneers reached the double-digit win plateau for the seventh time in the past eight years.
Voltolina, a 5-foot-11 senior outside hitter who finished the tournament with a combined two-match  total of 31 kills to bring her season total to 225, asserted herself early by registering six kills in the momentum-shifting first set.
Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Wilkins (Portage, Ind.) contributed 11 kills and eight digs for Carroll, which had a .241 hitting percentage with 12 kills in the opening set. Sophomore outside hitter Kylie Mueller (Fox Lake, Ill.) followed with nine kills and two blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Mrotek (Manitowoc, Wis.) had four service aces and 12 digs for the Pioneers, who amassed 44 kills, eight blocks, six aces, 44 assists and 45 digs. Freshman middle blocker Melanie Barrios (Bolingbrook, Ill.) had three blocks and sophomore setter Emma Przeslicke (Evergreen Park, Ill.) added 37 assists.
Carroll closed the match out with authority as it finished with a .222 hitting percentage and amassed 12 kills in the fourth set.
Senior outside hitter Masha Kolesnikova had 13 kills, six aces, seven digs and an assist for St. Lawrence, which dropped to 15-8 overall.
