Pioneers end road trip on strong note

Pierce scores season-high 19 points in victory over Iowa Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior guard Ray Pierce (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored a season-high 19 points to lead the Carroll University men's basketball team to an 88-75 victory over Iowa Wesleyan in the consolation game of the Snyder Thanksgiving Classic at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.
Junior point guard Ben Widdes (Rice Lake, Wis.) contributed 18 points for Carroll, which claimed its first road victory of the season to improve to 2-2 overall. 
Leading 38-37 following a hard-fought first half, the Pioneers stepped up the intensity and outscored Iowa Wesleyan 50-38 over the course of the final 20 minutes.
The contest remained tied 64-64 with eight minutes remaining but sophomore guard Nick Penny (Lake Zurich, Ill.) responded with a key 3-point basket near the left baseline, drew a foul and converted a free throw to complete a momentum-shifting four-point play - ultimately sparking a decisive 24-11 run for Carroll, which showcased its composure down the stretch by making 14 free throws.
Senior guard/forward Tanner Zaeske (South Milwaukee, Wis.) followed with 13 points for the Pioneers, who converted nine baskets from 3-point range and 21 of 27 free throws.
Penny finished with 10 points and sophomore guard/forward Charlie Soule (Oregon, Wis.) chipped in nine points for Carroll, which shot 52 percent from field-goal-range and outrebounded Iowa Wesleyan 40-25, including a key 30-21 advantage on the defensive glass. Senior guard/forward Joel Heesch (Mauston, Wis.) added eight points and pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds.
Widdes, who was selected to the all-tournament team, combined for a two-game total of 33 points.
