ELMHURST, Ill. - The Carroll University women's basketball team missed on several key opportunities in the second half, gradually fell out rhythm and lost to Elmhurst College 66-49 in a hard-fought College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener at R.A. Faganel Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard
Brittney Wald (Antigo, Wis.) contributed nine points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal for the young, steadily improving Pioneers, who dropped to 1-5 overall.
Trailing 38-37 midway through the third quarter, Carroll struggled to seize the momentum and yielded a critical 11-4 run over the final four minutes of the period.
Freshman small forward
Delaney Sjong (Salem, Wis.) had nine points with freshman forward
Katie Rossetti (Wauconda, Ill.) following with eight points, five rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots for the Pioneers, who made three 3-point baskets and 8 of 18 free throws. Junior guard
Sara Hartl (Racine, Wis.) chipped in six points and five rebounds. Freshman guard
Anna Menges (Manitowoc, Wis.) had six points and freshman point guard
Mallory Olszak (Crete, Ill.) added five points.
Senior forward Kaela Jones scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Elmhurst, which improved to 3-3 overall.
