Late Comeback Falls Short

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Carroll University (3-3) gave up an early lead and a late comeback attempt fell short as the Pios fell to MacMurray College (6-3) by the final score of 7-5.

MacMurray took the early lead as an errant throw on an advancing runner following a sacrifice bunt allowed a run to score, making the score 1-0.

The Pioneers would respond in the top of the fourth as Brady Durni would lead off the inning with a single and score on a Matt Putman double to tie the game at one.  Putman would promptly score on an RBI double off the bat of Jake Langford to give Carroll the 2-1 lead after three and a half innings.

Unfortunately, the lead would be short lived. MacMurray would plate a pair of runs in bottom of the 4th to reclaim the lead 3-2.

The Pios again would answer as Jacob Horner tripled to lead off the fifth and score on a RBI ground out from Durni to knot the game at 3-3.

Following two quick outs to start the bottom of the fifth defensively by Carroll, MacMurray would string together three consecutive two-out hits to plate a pair of runs to reclaim the lead 5-3.

MacMurray would extend it's lead with two more runs in the seventh to put the Pios in a 7-3 hole.

Carroll would mound a rally in the ninth as a two out hit by Durni would drive in a pair and allow him to advance to third with the lead now cut to 7-5.  However, a stellar defensive play by the MacMurray second baseman on a ball over his head would end the Pio rally and send Carroll to it's second consecutive loss.

Putman would lead the offense finishing 3x5 with a double and RBI and Durni would collect a pair of hits and two RBI.

Sophomore Cam Godinsky (0-1) would turn in a solid outing on the mound for Carroll. Godinsky would work six innings surrendering four earned.

The Pioneers get back on the diamond at 9am on Monday morning as they face Baruch College (NY).  Follow live game updates @Pio_Baseball .
