Carroll loses extra-inning battle

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Carroll University softball team lost to Illinois College 2-1 in a hard-fought, eight-inning nonconference game to open the second day of the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola Softball Complex on Sunday.
It was the first extra-inning loss of the season for Carroll, which dropped to 1-2 on its spring trip and 4-3 overall.
Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Illinois College junior shortstop Elyce Trout scored from third base on a wild pitch to seal a come-from-behind victory.
Carroll collected the first run of the contest as freshman center fielder Rosalie Jrolf (Dousman, Wis.) scored on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth.
Illinois College tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as senior pinch runner Mickalah York scored on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to force extra innings.
The Pioneers had a golden opportunity to regain a lead in the eighth with runners on first and third with two outs but couldn't get the hit, falling victim to an inning-ending groundout.
Senior right-hander Hannah Miller (Chicago, Ill.) pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts and five walks through six complete innings for Carroll. Freshman right-hander Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) took the loss, yielding three walks with one strikeout over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Jrolf, Miller and sophomore right fielder Annika Graves (Muskego, Wis.) each had a hit for the Pioneers, who stranded 13 baserunners.
Freshman right-hander Maddie Nichols pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts, eight walks and a hit batsman to earn a complete-game victory for Iliinois College, which earned its first victory of the season to improve to 1-2 overall.
