Carroll holds on for nail-biting victory

Arroyo drives in winning run, Osterhus pitches shutout for Pios

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Carroll University softball team edged Marietta College 1-0 to cap its third day of the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola Softball Complex on Monday.
It was the second one-run nonconference victory and third shutout of the season for Carroll, which improved to 3-3 on its spring break trip and 6-4 overall.
Freshman left fielder Haylee Arroyo (Mayville, Wis.) drove in what proved to be the winning run on a clutch two-out bases-loaded single to left field in the bottom of the first inning.
It was a successful day for Arroyo, who capped her standout two-game season debut by going 3-for-6 with two RBIs for the Pioneers.
Senior shortstop Megan Kohlmetz (Appleton, Wis.) scored the game-winner after a lead-off double and advancing to third on a critical sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Maggie Erdman (Jefferson, Wis.).
Kohlmetz went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers, who stranded five runners on base.
Freshman right-hander Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) fired a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks en route to a complete-game victory.
Osterhus, who improved to 3-1 overall with her second dominating shutout victory of the tournament, has 30 strikeouts with a 1.80 earned run average through 25 complete innings this season.
Senior southpaw Alison Kach pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks through six innings for Marietta, which dropped to 3-4 overall.
Marietta attempted to rally in the top of the seventh with the potential tying run at first and two outs but fell victim to a game-ending fielder's choice groundout.
