WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University (6-15, 1-7 CCIW) used a six run eighth inning to score a come from behind 13-12 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College (8-12, 2-4 NACC) on Wednesday afternoon.
Down a run in the first, Carroll evened the score as Jake Langford lead off the inning with a double to the left field corner and would score on a RBI groundout by Sam Harmeyer to tie the game 1-1.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Harmeyer would lead off with a single and score on a two-out RBI double off the bat of Brady Durni to cut the lead to 3-2.
Carroll would take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Durni would again drive home Harmeyer with two outs. Durni would later score on a Joe Huss infield single and an errant throw. Huss would then score on a Mike Rufer RBI double to give the Pios the 5-4 lead.
Wisconsin Lutheran would retake the lead 7-5 with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
The Pios would tie the game at seven in the bottom of the seventh as Harmeyer would drive home Huss and Caleb Emmer on a single to left field.
The Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran would answer with five runs in the top of the eighth inning, the big blow coming on a two-out grand slam from Colton Tisch push the lead to 12-7.
As they had done all day, the Pioneers would have an answer. Nolan Heck reached to start the inning, followed by a Durni single and misplayed bunt from Huss to load the bases. Heck would score the first run of the inning on a balk. Rufer would then drive home Durni and Huss would score on a Jacob Horner ground out to cut the lead to 12-10. Langford and Harmeyer would both single and Horner would score on a throwing error to bring the Pios within a run at 12-11. Hunter Frey would walk to load the bases with two outs. Heck would draw the walk to push across the tying run and Durni would single home the sixth run of the inning to give Carroll the 13-12 lead.
Jacob Langford would work a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first career save.
Durni would finish 4x6 on the day with two doubles and three RBI. Harmeyer was 3x5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Carroll returns to action as the travel to Wheaton College for a double header on Friday before returning home to host North Central on Saturday.
