KENOSHA, Wis – Carroll University (9-21, 4-11 CCIW) dropped the opening game of their double header 4-3 in 11 innings before falling in the second game 5-2 at Carthage College (16-13, 8-7 CCIW).
The Pioneers would open game one by plating a pair of runs in the top of the first. Jake Langford would reach on a fielding error and Matt Putman would single. Hunter Frey would move both runners up with a sacrifice bunt and Langford would score on an AJ Johnson sacrifice fly. Putman would then score on a Brady Durni single to give Carroll the 2-0 lead.
Carthage would answer with a single run in the bottom of the first to cut the Pio lead to 2-1 and plate two more in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead 3-2.
Carroll would knot the game up in the top of the fifth as Mike Rufer would walk to lead off the inning. Jacob Horner would advance Rufer to second on a sacrifice bunt and Putman would single to plate Rufer and tie the game 3-3.
The Pios had an opportunity to take a lead in the top of the 11
th inning as Frey would lead off the inning with a double down the left field line and advance to third on a sacrifice bunt. However a failed squeeze would leave the bases empty with two outs. Back to back singles in the inning followed by a walk would load the bases, but a strike out would end the threat.
Ryan Rodgers would lead off for Carthage in the bottom of the 11
th and send the second pitch of the inning over the left field fence for the walk-off win.
Andrew Stone would start and take the no-decision for Carroll on the mound. Stone would work six and a third innings giving up three runs while striking out five. Logan Johnson would take the loss working the final three innings just giving up two hits, one being the walk-off homerun.
In game two, Carthage would score in a single tally in the bottom of the first and add a pair in the bottom of the third to take the 3-0 advantage.
Carroll would struggle to put anything together offensively for the first seven inning. In the top of the eighth inning they would final get on the board. Zach Meyer would lead off with a double down the left field line and score on a Sam Harmeyer two-out single to cut the lead to 3-1. Harmeyer would then score on a Frey single to bring the Pios to within 3-2.
Unfortunately, Carthage would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 5-2.
Carroll would get two runners on in the top of the ninth but the rally would fall short as Carthage held on for the 5-2 victory.
Cam Godinsky was solid on the mound for Carroll. Godinsky would work seven and a third innings, scattering eight hits while striking out two.
Carroll returns home for a CCIW double header on Sunday versus Elmhurst College at 1pm.
