Pios Can't Hold Lead Fall on Road To Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. - Carroll University (11-25, 6-15 CCIW) couldn't hold a 2-1 lead and fell on the road to Elmhurst College (21-16, 12-9 CCIW) by the final score of 5-2.

The Pioneers would strike first in the top of the opening inning.  Sam Harmeyer would single to left and advance to second on a Matt Putman infield single.  With two outs, Hunter Frey would send a line drive to left scoring Harmeyer and giving the Pios the 1-0 lead.

Carroll would add to their lead in the third as Putman would be hit by a pitch and advance on a walk and fielder's choice before scoring on a two-out hit from Zach Meyer to make the score 2-0.
Elmhurst would cut into the lead in the bottom of the third on a Ben Havel solo homerun to left field making the score 2-1.

The score would stay 2-1 into the bottom of the sixth inning.  Elmhurst would start the inning with a hit batter, walk and a mishandled bunt to load the bases with no one out.  Back-to-back strike outs would look to give the Pios a chance to escape the inning, but a two-out ground ball with eyes to right field would plate a pair of runs giving Elmhurst a 3-2 lead.  Havel would then double off the center field wall scoring another two runs before the Pios could record the third out and trail 5-2.

Carroll wouldn't be able to generate any offense despite some hard hit balls in the last three innings and would fall by the final of 5-2.

Carter Howard was solid on the mound, working five innings while scattering just five hits and one earned run.

On offense, Carroll would pound out ten hits while drawing a pair of walks and a hit batter, but strand nine of those runners.  Meyer and Jake Langford would pace the offense with two hits each.

The Pios will return to action tomorrow as they host Wisconsin Lutheran College in a non-conference match up at Frame Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 7pm.
