Pios Split at MIllikin, Langford Breaks Hit Record

DECATUR, Ill. - Carroll University (13-27, 7-17 CCIW) split the season finale at Millikin (22-16, 11-13 CCIW) winning the opener 10-7 before dropping the back half 10-5.

With two outs in the third, the Pios would open the scoring as AJ Johnson would single home Brady Durni to take the 1-0 lead.

A Millikin two-run homerun in the bottom of the third would give the Big Blue a 2-1 lead.

The Carroll offense answer with a pair of runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth as they send 11 batters to the plate in the inning to take the 8-2 lead.

Millikin would plate a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-5.

Carroll would add a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as back-to-back two-out single and a walk would load the bases.  Zach Meyer would then double in a pair of runs on a double down the left field line to extend the lead to 10-5.

A Millikin two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh would trim the lead to 10-7.

The Big Blue would load the bases with two-outs in the eighth, but Logan Johnson would come out of the bullpen and end the rally, recording the strike out to end the inning.
Johnson would work around a walk and a hit in the ninth to record the save and seal the 10-7 victory.

Sophomore Cam Godinsky would start on the mound and earn the win for the Pios.  Godinsky would work six and a third innings striking out six.

Meyer and Hunter Frey would pace the offense, both finishing with three hits.  AJ Johnson, Sam Harmeyer and Jake Langford would each add two hits as the Pios finished with 15 hits in the game.

Carroll would get out of the gates well in game two as Brady Durni led off the game with a single and would score on an AJ Johnson double to take the early 1-0 lead.

Millikin would use the long-ball to regain the lead in the bottom of the second as a two-run shot to right would give them the 2-1 lead.

Langford would single to lead off the top of the forth and score on an RBI ground out with one out to tie the game at two.

A pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth would allow Millikin to retake the lead 4-2.

Joe Huss would lead off the fifth for the Pios with a double into the left field corner and eventually score on a Harmeyer single to left to cut the deficit to 4-3.

A pair of three run innings in the fifth and seventh innings for Millikin would balloon their lead to 10-3.

In the eighth inning, Carroll would add a pair of runs on deep solo homeruns from Langford and Frey to get the Pioneers to within 10-5.  That would be as close as the Pios would get.
Langford, Johnson and Huss would each collect a pair of hits for the Carroll offense.

Langford, a junior, would break the season record for hits in a season.  With his four hits in the double-header Langford would finish the season with 60 hits.  The previous record was set just a year ago as Dylan Grove would collect 57 hits in 2016.
