Pioneers win second straight

Connell, DeGroot and Peterson star in victory over St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. - Sophomore defender Shea Connell (Alfaz Del Pi, Spain) contributed two goals and an assist to lead the Carroll University men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over St. Norbert College in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon.
It was the second consecutive victory for Carroll, which won for the first time on the road this season and improved to 2-4-1 overall.
Trailing 2-1 at the 50:58 mark, the Pioneers answered the challenge by scoring three times over the course of the final 40 minutes.
Senior midfielder Kieran DeGroot (De Pere, Wis.) converted in the 52nd minute to spark the second-half offensive surge, successfully finishing on a rebounded penalty kick by Connell.
Junior forward Chad Peterson (Mukwonago, Wis.) followed with what later became the winning 25-yard goal off an assist from sophomore defender Peanut Taylor (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) at the 59:49 mark.
Connell, who scored his first goal of the day on an assist from sophomore midfielder Ryan Effinger (West Allis, Wis.) in the 23rd minute, added a breakaway in the 89th minute to put an exclamation point on the hard-fought, inspired effort for the Pioneers.
Each team took seven shots in the battle of former Midwest Conference rivals with Carroll maintaining a critical 6-3 advantage in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Connor Thompson (Kent, Wash.) had two saves in playing the entire 90 minutes to help preserve a victory.
Sophomore midfielder/defender Anthony Masello scored on a header in the sixth minute and sophomore forward/midfielder Ben Prange converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute for St. Norbert, which dropped to 3-3 overall.
