Slow first quarter costly in CCIW loss

KENOSHA, Wis. - Junior quarterback Colton Bahling (Belvidere, Ill.) completed 18 of 28 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns as the Carroll University football team lost to Carthage College 55-20 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second consecutive road loss for Carroll, which dropped to 1-1 in the conference standings and 1-3 overall.
Carthage, which improved to 2-1 in league and 4-1 overall, scored 34 unanswered points in the decisive opening quarter.
Junior quarterback Kyle Friberg completed 9 of 13 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Redmen, who amassed 16 first downs and 419 yards of total offense. Kameron James rushed four times for 73 yards and a touchdown while Tommy Bazarek had three catches for 101 yards and two TDs.
Bahling connected on touchdown passes of 3, 12 and 19 yards  for Carroll, which generated 11 first downs and 292 total yards.
The Carroll offense gradually found its rhythm as the game progressed, resulting in long, sustained scoring drives of 74, 75 and 82 yards.
Senior wide receiver Brandon Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis.) hauled in four receptions for a team-high 96 yards for the Pioneers, who committed three turnovers and converted just 5 of 14 times on third down.
Junior wide receiver Parker Zitzke (Waukesha, Wis.)  followed with four catches for 30 yards and a touchdown. Senior tight end Jarrett Fintel (Waukesha, Wis.) and senior wide receiver Matt Neerdaels (Phillips, Wis.) each added a TD catch.
Junior defensive back Billy Krawczyk (Lockport, Ill.) registered a team-high nine tackles and junior safety Cameron Cassaro (Caledonia, Ill.) had eight tackles to pace the Pioneer defense.
