Road woes continue for Pioneers

Ingebrigtsen scores game-high 23 points in scrappy CCIW loss to Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - Junior forward Tyler Ingebrigtsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half but it wasnt enough as the Carroll University men's basketball team lost to Carthage College 69-65 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin showdown at Tarble Arena on Wednesday night.
It was the fourth consecutive conference road loss for Carroll, which dropped to 0-5 in the league standings and 4-10 overall.
The Pioneers trailed 61-58 late in the second half but Carthage answered with a decisive 8-7 run over the course of the final three minutes - making 6 of 6 free throws within the final 46 seconds to seal a victory.
Ingebrigtsen converted a layup to trim the deficit to 61-60 with 2:39 remaining but Carroll couldn't get any closer.
Senior guard/forward Tanner Zaeske (South Milwaukee, Wis.) contributed 18 points with four 3-point baskets - including a buzzer-beating last-second desperation shot as time expired - for Carroll, which converted six 3-pointers and 7 of 11 free throws. Senior guard Joel Heesch (Mauston, Wis.) followed with eight points.
Junior guard Troy Howat (Plainfield, Ill.) and sophomore forward Kale Maupin (Peotone, Ill.) each added six points for the Pioneers, who shot 50 percent from field-goal range.
Four of Carroll's five conference losses this season have come by six points or less.
Senior forward Brad Kruse scored a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Carthage, which improved to 3-2 in conference and 8-6 overall. Junior guard Jordan Thomas had 16 points with three 3-pointers and sophomore forward Kienan Baltimore aadded 10 points for the Red Men, who made 20 of 28 free throws, three 3-pointers and shot 53.5 percent from the field.
Carthage, which registered 13 blocked shots and forced 17 turnovers, outrebounded the Pioneers 31-23 in the contest - maintaining a 23-16 advantage on the defensive glass.
