WAUKESHA, Wis. -
David Meza knew what had to be done.
Meza, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound senior tight end from Berlin, Wis., emphasized that point as he caught what proved to be the game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback
Colton Bahling (Belvidere, Ill.) to cap a seven-play, 52-yard drive with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter as the Carroll University football team defeated North Park University 23-0 in a cold, blustery College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game Saturday afternoon at Schneider Stadium.
It was the second home-field victory of the season for Carroll, which snapped a three-game conference losing streak to improve to 2-4 in the league standings and 3-4 overall with the dominant Homecoming Weekend performance in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd.
The victory took on added meaning as it was Carroll's first homecoming victory since Oct. 3, 2015, first shutout since Oct. 26. 2013 and marked the first time the program has won two conference games in a season since rejoining the CCIW in 2016.
The Pioneers scored 17 unanswered points in the first half, including 10 in the momentum-building second quarter.
On the winning play, Bahling took control of the snap out of shotgun formation, faked a quick handoff to the right and fired a short pass back toward the left side to Meza.
Seconds later, Meza hauled in the catch, abruptly showcased his athleticism by making an impressive spin move to work past two defenders, followed his blocks downfield and sprinted hard for the end zone.
"It was a screen pass from about 15 yards out, and after making the catch I knew my teammates (referring to senior wide receivers
Parker Zitzke (Waukesha, Wis.) and
Bailey Brown (McHenry, Ill.) would be there to make the blocks downfield," Meza said. That's when I just tried to make a move and did my best to get in the end zone to finish it off. It was all for the team.
"With it being on homecoming, it was one of those plays that we will remember for the rest of our lives. It snowed during pregame, the atmosphere was great and it was awesome to come away with a victory. Looking back, it was an unrivaled experience from start to finish."
Bahling also rushed 20 times for 100 yards in leading the Carroll offense, which amassed 20 first downs and 355 yards of total offense - 327 yards coming via its punishing ground attack behind a large, athletic offensive line.
"It was our first homecoming victory in a few years and a fun experience," said Bahling, who only attempted seven passes in the contest as the result of the challenging weather conditions. "On the touchdown pass in the first quarter, the execution wasn't pretty but David (Meza) made the catch, showcased his athleticism and took it from there.
Offensively, we moved the ball downfield throughout the day and fortunately finished off some key drives. It was a little difficult to throw at times because of the weather so we really focused on asserting the run game and followed the amazing lead set by the linemen upfront. That's when were able to continue to make plays, build upon the lead and grind it out the rest of the way. The defense played a great game and did a terrific job of posting the shutout. Every CCIW game is difficult so now we just want to make the most of it, maintain the momentum and keep it going in the weeks to come."
Senior running back
Drake Pusateri (Lombard, Ill.) scored on a 1-yard run and senior kicker
Griffin Idelman (Wood Dale, Ill.) converted a 28-yard field goal during the key second-quarter.
Freshman running back
Preston Bell (Scottlandville, La.) completed an effective 1-2 punch by rushing 21 times for team-high 141 yards - highlighted by a 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for the Pioneers, who converted on 3 of 5 opportunities in the red zone. Senior running back J.J. Keels (Melbourne, Fla.) added 15 attempts for 78 yards.
"It was a sweet homecoming victory and one of the best days of my collegiate career," said a smiling Bell, of the effort. "I would like to give a big shout out to the offensive line for doing a great job of blocking upfront and creating a lot of big holes to run through. I continued to get stronger and began to run with more confidence as the game went on. To be able to have a great individual day is one thing but to have it come as part of an important victory for the team on such a special occasion was truly an unbelievable feeling. I loved every minute of it. It was just a really good day from start to finish."
Senior free safety
Cameron Cassaro (Caledonia, Ill.) registered a team-high eight takles, forced a fumble and broke up two passes to help lead the stingy Carroll defense, which yielded 11 first downs with 174 total yards and forced three turnovers. Senior defensive back
Colin Shepley (Northfield, Minn.) followed with seven tackles while senior defensive back
Billy Krawczyk (Lockport, Ill.) had five solo tackles, an interception and broke up two passes.Â
Junior defensive back
Bennett Polzin (Lake Mills, Wis.) and sophomore defensive back
Tyler Baird (Caledonia, Ill.) each recovered a fumble for the Pioneers.Â
"It was our first homecoming victory in a few years and meant a lot," said Krawczyk, whose team-leading fourth interception of the season came with 10:23 left in the third quarter. "Defensively, we played really great and worked our tails off to turn in the shutout. From beginning to end, we just played as a unit, focused on the fundamentals and followed our assignments.
"As a senior, it was an awesome experience ringing the victory bell on such a special day. It's one of those memories I will remember for many years to come."
Carroll head coach
Mark Krzykowski was pleased with the way his scrappy team seized the opportunity to play up to its potential and honor the Carroll community.
"This victory was for every Pioneer," said Krzykowski, a 1994 graduate of Carroll (noting the importance of being able to lean on the team's strong running game to offset the heavy winds and cold conditions). "Obviously, I'm very happy for the guys and their great effort but also for all of the alumni who were able to come back and enjoy the atmosphere today. We try hard every week so to be able to come away with a victory on homecoming made it even more special.
"This one was for everyone who has ever played on this field and the entire Carroll community." Â
Junior running back Justice Macneal-Young rushed 21 times for 98 yards for North Park, which dropped to 0-6 in conference and 1-6 overall.
