Carroll surrenders late run in nonconference loss

Stefka, Cruz lead Pioneers in frustrating road battle with UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Freshman forward Kayla Stefka (Johnsburg, Ill.) scored 13 of her team-high 15 points in the first half but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University women's basketball team lost to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville 73-66 in a nonconference game Wednesday night.
It was the second straight road loss for Carroll, which dropped to 3-5 overall following the frustrating final outcome.
Carroll led 61-59 late in the fourth quarter but couldn't sustain the momentum, yielding a decisive 14-5 run over the course of the final three minutes - including 12 unanswered points during a crucial two-minute stretch.
Freshman guard Alyssa Cruz (West Allis, Wis.) followed with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Pioneers, who converted seven baskets from 3-point range, 11 of 19 free throws and shot 41.4 percent from field-goal range. Freshman guard Theresa Wichser (Waukesha, Wis.) contributed nine points with three 3-pointers and sophomore center Katie Rossetti (Wauconda, Ill.) had nine points with a team-best 10 rebounds, three assists, one steal and a blocked shot.
Sophomore center Amari Whittington (Kenosha, Wis.) had eight points and sophomore guard Emily Majerus (Plymouth, Wis.) added five points for Carroll, which was outrebounded 42-31 - including a 15-6 margin on the offensive glass.
Junior guard Morgan Horstman scored a game-high 16 points for UW-Platteville, which improved to 4-3 overall. Senior guard Kassie Buchholz and sophomore guard Caitlyn Tipton each had 13 points for the Pioneers, who made five 3-pointers, 18 of 27 free throws and shot 37.9 percent from the field.
