Brittney Wald savored the accomplishment.
Wald, a 5-foot-6 senior guard from Antigo, Wis., scored 21 of her season-high 31 points in the second half to reach the prestigious 1,000-point career milestone as the Carroll University women's basketball team lost to Carthage College 90-67 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin season finale at Tarble Arena on Tuesday night.
With the outstanding individual performance in her final collegiate game, Wald joined an elite group as she became only the 16th player in the long, rich history of the Carroll women's program to accomplish the feat.
Wald, the lone senior on the roster who came into the contest with 969 points, reached the 1,000-point mark by converting a mid-range jump shot with 1 minute, 22 seconds remaining.
She converted 12 field goals, four 3-point baskets, 3 of 6 free throws and had three steals in playing a team-high 28 minutes.
Carroll ended the season in sixth place in the conference standings with a 5-11 record and finished 8-17 overall - showcasing the program's steady growth and progress by winning seven more games than 2016-17.
The Pioneers were outscored 53-26 in the first half, including what became a decisive 31-10 margin in the second quarter.
Freshman small forward
Delaney Sjong (Salem, Wis.) followed with 13 points - including 5 of 5 free throws - seven rebounds and an assist for Carroll, which made five 3-point baskets, 14 of 20 free thwos and shot 44.4 percent from field-goal range. Freshman point guard
Emily Majerus (Playmouth, Wis.) chipped in seven points, four rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
Junior forward
Rachel Van Sluys (Sheboygan, Wis.) and junior guard
Sara Hartl (Racine, Wis.) each added five points for the Pioneers, who trailed 22-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Junior guard Bailey Gilbert scored 17 points with five 3-pointers to lead Carthage, which finished the regular season in sole possession of third place with an 11-5 record and 18-7 overall with the Senior Night victory. Sophomore guard Madie Kaelber added 17 points for the Lady Red, who made 13 3-pointers, 7 of 12 free throws and shot 58.3 percent from the field.
Illinois Wesleyan (15-1), Wheaton (14-2), Carthage (11-5) and Elmhurst (9-7) claimed the top four spots to advance to the CCIW Tournament.
